A Prediction Market User Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the hours before Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
But these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other individuals also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Grows
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
A bill put forward on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.
Industry Context
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
