Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to remain inside as powerful gusts batter the country.

Intense winds reaching speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 homes lacking electricity and compelled agencies to call off over 100 flights, as reported by local media.

These gusts are influencing the entire southern region and southern parts of the northern region, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have issued rare high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in central regions encompassing these major districts.

Locals have been advised to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for additional utility disruptions.

Extensive Impact and Crisis Response

The power cut is primarily influencing homes mainly in the southern region, though agencies state that the electricity supply was being slowly brought back.

Regional news have indicated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, while power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gales.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was swept into oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the metropolis have been halted because of the weather, while various routes and public facilities are not operating.

At the same time Canterbury officials have declared a state of emergency, to support emergency management operations.

Work Stoppages During Extreme Weather

The powerful gales on today come as numerous of educators, medical professionals and government employees take part in what has been called a "significant labor action", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the extreme weather has pressured them to alter certain arrangements, with several external protests relocated inside or called off.

Similar gusts are affecting the neighboring country, ushering in a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Agencies have issued flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding bushfires.
